Mrs. Opal Marie Gilbert, 72, died Saturday at her home, 502 E. Main St., after a long illness. Mrs. Gilbert was a long time employe of the J. C. Penney Co., and for 15 years operated the elevator in the Ben Hur Building. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Rebekah Lodge. A native of Advance, she was born Aug. 22, 1896, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Whitecotton. Her first marriage was to Fred Ferrell. She married George Gilbert Nov. 9, 1934. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Homer Hancock of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Lawrence Grimes of Waveland; a foster daughter, Mrs. Ronald Taylor of Crawfordsville; and two sisters, Mrs. Sam Priebe of Waveland and Mrs. George Reynolds of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Fred and John Whitecotton, both of Waveland; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and two nieces reared by Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Anthony Ausetts of Cleveland and Mrs. James Shillings of near Crawfordsville. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home. Interment will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may pay respects at the funeral home.
